After forty years of tabletop roleplaying, I’ve owned more rulebooks than I could ever count, and I’ve misplaced about half of them. I’ve played in worlds long out of print, built systems that barely made sense outside my own table, and reused more binders and notebooks than I care to admit. Funny enough, the resources I now grab aren’t the oldest or the most expensive. They’re the dependable, clever, and flexible tools that make running a game smoother and more fun.
This list is for the emergent Game Master, a person ready to host their first few adventures with family or close friends. You don’t need to buy everything or turn your dining room into an Adventure Command Center. Rather, you need a few reliable pieces that make storytelling easier and more enjoyable. I’ve chosen items that balance creativity with simplicity and value. My suggested list should carry you through a full year of play without collecting dust.
“Less is often enough, particularly when you have good company, a shared story, and a bowl of snacks within reach.”
Each section highlights what I use most often and why it remains worth returning. You’ll see where I believe it’s smart to invest a little more, and where you can comfortably scale back. Think of this as practical advice from someone who has learned that less is often enough, particularly when you have good company, a shared story, and perhaps a bowl of snacks within reach.

Dice and accessories create rhythm, fairness, and unpredictability. The right ones turn tension into laughter and strategic calculations into connections. Whenever possible, encourage actual dice rolls instead of electronic devices or apps. Stay engaged!

Final Thoughts
Every Game Master builds a toolkit over time that fits the unique rhythm of their table. Players bring their own energy, humor, and surprises to every session. For the emergent GM ready to host family and friends, start with resources that support a clear focus and shared creativity. The items gathered here come from forty years of running games, including my most recent experiences as a professional therapeutic GM. I offer essentials that lower barriers and encourage presence, without breaking the bank.
With less than $300 total, you equip yourself for a full year of monthly adventures. Dice clatter in a shared tray, tokens track karma with a simple grab, and wooden minis explore or fight. Maps lie flat for instant, unambiguous tactics. Each piece reduces preparation friction, so you stay engaged with the group.
Good tools enable the real work of GMing. They create space for player choices, spontaneous laughter, and those moments when a story takes an unexpected turn. Confidence grows session by session as you see what works for your table. Players notice the flow, the fairness, the fun.
Gather your group. Set up your kit. Roll the first die. The adventure waits, and so does the joy of shared stories. Your table becomes a place where memories form…one turn at a time.
